For Streamers
Let your Twitch chat decide whether you live or die. Mostly die.
What streamer mode does
Level Crawl reads your Twitch chat and lets your viewers vote on what happens to your Delver. A vote box pops up at the top of the game with two or three options. Chat types !1, !2 or !3, the tally updates live while the vote is open (30 seconds unless you change it), and whatever wins happens on the spot, with the host mocking the result. Each viewer gets one vote, and changing your mind counts.
Set it up in 30 seconds
- Open levelcrawl.com and pick Settings on the title screen (or the gear at the top right during a run), then open the Streaming tab.
- Type your Twitch channel name in Twitch channel: just the name, like the end of twitch.tv/yourname.
- Tick Streamer mode. The line under it says "Connected" once the game is reading your chat.
- Go live on Twitch. Chat only counts while your stream is on: until then the line says you're not live yet, and a grey OFF AIR tag sits in the game's top bar. Within a minute of going live it turns into a purple LIVE tag and chat can play.
- Streaming at a distance? Press Big text for stream in the same tab. It makes the text and the vote box big enough to read on stream, and the sliders under it fine-tune them.
That's it. There's no login, no bot account, no key and nothing to install. The game only reads your public chat, the same way anyone watching your stream can. It never posts in your chat. Want to try it before you go live? Tick Offline testing and chat counts even while you're offline. Untick it before your real stream.
When chat gets a vote
- A twist on every floor. A few seconds after each new floor starts, chat picks one of three twists: one good, one bad and one wild card.
- Shrines. At a Sponsor Shrine you get a new choice, "Let chat decide (free)". Skip the offering and let chat choose the blessing or the curse.
- Prize Crates. After you open a crate, chat can throw in a potion, tax your gold or hype you up.
The things chat can pick include healing you, a stat boost, revealing the floor, extra turns, a potion or crate, Hype, poison, a monster, a Fan Favorite, a gold tax and a shorter floor timer, plus a gold shower, fan mail XP, a lullaby that puts monsters to sleep, a mana and ammo refill, a sack of scrap, a dinner bell that wakes everything, a little gang of monsters, a curse, a round of boos, free bandages for the monsters and a random teleport. If nobody votes, the host picks.
Chat commands
If Chat commands is on in the Streaming tab (it is by default), viewers can also type these while you're live:
- !potion sponsors you a Health Potion. The first one on each floor works; the rest are ignored.
- !monster sends a monster at you. It works once every 3 minutes for the whole chat, so nobody can grief you into the ground.
The chatter's name shows up in the game log, so they get the credit or the blame.
Good to know
- Streamer mode is off in the Daily Dungeon, so the leaderboard stays fair for everyone.
- Votes last 30 seconds by default. If your stream has a long delay, set Vote length in the Streaming tab to 45, 60 or 90 seconds so chat has time to see the vote and answer. The game doesn't pause during a vote, so keep playing.
- Chat can't do anything while your stream is offline, so nobody can mess with your run from an empty channel.
- It works in Play with friends too. Chat only touches your own Delver there, and never the shared floor clock.
- It works in Hard Mode too, if you want your chat to watch you suffer properly.
- Twitch only for now. YouTube chat may come later.
- Turning streamer mode off in Settings disconnects from chat right away.
Streaming Level Crawl
You're welcome to stream and make videos of Level Crawl, monetized or not. A link to levelcrawl.com in your description is appreciated but not required. It's a free, unofficial fan game, so please don't present it as an official product of the books that inspired it.
